Virtual Assistant or Personal Assistant: What's the Difference?
If you've been looking for business support, you've probably come across the terms Virtual Assistant (VA) and Personal Assistant (PA). They often sound like different roles, but in reality they have far more in common than you might think.
The biggest difference isn't what they do, it's how they work.
What does a Personal Assistant do?
A Personal Assistant provides administrative support to help keep a business organised and running smoothly. That might include managing diaries, organising meetings, handling emails, preparing documents or coordinating projects.
Traditionally, a PA worked in an office, but today many also work remotely.
What does a Virtual Assistant do?
A Virtual Assistant offers many of the same services but works remotely and is usually self-employed. Rather than employing someone full-time, you can hire a VA for as little or as much support as you need.
Whether it's managing your inbox, organising your diary, updating your website or helping with a one-off project, a Virtual Assistant gives you the flexibility to get support without taking on an employee.
So, what's the difference?
In truth, there isn't a huge difference.
A Personal Assistant is often employed by one organisation, while a Virtual Assistant is self-employed and usually supports several clients. The day-to-day tasks are often very similar – it's simply a different way of working.
Why I use both titles
You'll notice that I describe myself as both a Virtual Assistant and a Remote Personal Assistant.
That's quite deliberate.
While Virtual Assistant has become the more common term, many people are still much more familiar with Personal Assistant or PA. Some of my clients initially contact me looking for a PA before discovering that a Virtual Assistant offers exactly the flexible support they're looking for.
By using both titles, I'm simply making it easier for people to find the support they need, whichever term they're searching for.
Which is right for you?
If you're a small business, freelancer, creative professional or charity looking for flexible support, a Virtual Assistant is often the perfect solution. You get experienced administrative support without the commitment of employing someone full-time, and you can increase or reduce your hours as your business changes.
Whether you call it a Virtual Assistant, Remote PA or Personal Assistant, the aim is exactly the same – to give you back time so you can focus on running your business.
If that sounds like the kind of support you're looking for, I'd love to hear from you.
